We hope to see you at 2:00pm EST on Sunday, October 2nd for our monthly support group! Our guest will be Johnna Mahoney, an attending neonatologist at Holy Cross Hospital, and our topic will be "Medical Management of Omphaloceles." Johnna has cared for many babies with omphaloceles and emphasizes the importance of serving the family as a whole. As always, everyone from the omphalocele community is welcome (parents of new O babies, experienced parents with older O children, pregnant mothers or expectant family members, grandparents, friends, adult omphalocele survivors) and you are all an important part of our group!
"Dr. Johnna Mahoney is an attending neonatologist at Holy Cross Hospital in Silver Spring, MD. She received her undergraduate degree at Penn State University and attended Georgetown University for a Masters in Physiology before returning to her alma mater Penn State for her medical degree. She completed her pediatric residency at St. Christopher’s Hospital for Children in Philadelphia, PA, and her neonatology fellowship at the Thomas Jefferson University/Christiana Care/Nemours Children's Hospital program in Philadelphia and Delaware. She lives in Maryland with her husband and enjoys reading fiction, cooking, and watching Penn State football."
As a neonatologist, she has cared for many babies with omphaloceles, and takes a special interest in the condition. Her experience with omphaloceles took on a new meaning after a friend's baby was diagnosed.
At October's group, she plans to discuss the immediate medical management of omphaloceles, as well as current treatment controversies. She is interested in meeting with the group both to provide a neonatologist's perspective, but more importantly to gain insight into how neonatologists can better care for families as a whole, not just the baby as a patient.
